How fuel price cycles work in Australia

Most Australian capital cities - Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth among them - run on a rough 4–6 week petrol price cycle that tracks terminal-gate wholesale costs. The pump price isn't really following the cost of fuel day to day; it's the retailers' margin sawtoothing up and down. Prices are hiked sharply on a "restore" day, then grind slowly down as servos undercut each other, until someone hikes again and the cycle restarts. That pattern is consistent enough to plan around. Prices typically bottom out on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the days after a reset, then climb toward the weekend and public holidays. Watching the 14-day trend for your city tells you roughly where you sit in the cycle - fill near the bottom and you'll save around $3–5 a tank versus the top.
